Joshua Tree National Park 2017

Joshua Tree National Park is located in Southern California, approximately one hour from Palm Springs. The park sits on land that once belonged to the Serrano, Cahuilla, and Chemehuevi Indigenous peoples.  The Indigenous people referred to the area as the Oasis of Mara but in 1855 Colonel Henry Washington changed the name to Twentynine Palms. In Southern California, the Indigenous population was decimated due to American colonization with the local populations going from 150,000 in 1845 to less than 30,000 people by 1870.
